Superheroes on the Oscars Red Carpet Part One

Ah, the Academy Awards. I watched maybe an eighth of the actual ceremony — I don’t get ABC in the wilds of Connecticut and the rebel Youtuber livestream I found was cut off in the middle of Sam Smith’s performance. I watched the backstage coverage for a few but it was intensely boring, especially compared to Fox’s backstage coverage of the Emmy’s which included the bar and was the highlight of my awards reporting last year. So instead I followed the events on twitter and collected over 60 pictures of superheroes on the red carpet. Here’s part one: actors who have played superheroes in film.

Avengers:

Chris Evans

Chris Evans

Possibly Evans’ secret to being a beloved Captain America is his ability to sell Old Hollywood Glamour close to flawlessly.

Chadwick Boseman

Chadwick Boseman

This picture is adorable. I love the blue suit. Bowties are cool. I am READY for Black Panther.

Mark Ruffalo

Mark Ruffalo

The Hulk also wore blue but is not quite pulling it off as well as Chris or Chadwick. This is almost high-end-cruise-waiter chic. But he’s darling, especially when celebrating his film’s surprise Best Picture win with a wink:

Mark Ruffalo

Is Elektra an Avenger?

Jennifer Garner

Jennifer Garner

I don’t think so but if not then there were no women Avengers at the Oscars. I guess that’s what happens when there are so few to begin with and none of them are headlining movies to be promoted onstage and you haven’t cast the ONE woman Avenger who is (allegedly) getting her own film because it’s premiere is laughably far away and you have to kill off Uncle Ben one* more time.

*Until they cast this kid:

Jacob Tremblay

Jacob Tremblay

ANYWAY, Jennifer Garner looks great and like she could definitely play another super if Marvel wants to cast any more women.

Justice League:

Batfleck didn’t come but here’s the artist formerly known as Batman.

Christian Bale

Christian Bale and Sibi Blazic

This is way too much black on black on black (on both of them!) for me but I guess it fits a Gotham aesthetic.

Henry Cavill

Henry Cavill

O M G. I am pretty certain I have never seen Henry Cavill look more like Superman than he does in this picture?! Like. Damn boy! I find myself newly excited to see his sophomore take on the role. This also helps:

Lois and Clark in a bathtub.

Lois and Clark in a bathtub.

CUTE.

And…. that’s it cuz they only have one woman member (boo!) and she’s currently filming her solo film (yay!).

Suicide Squad:

Jared Leto

Jared Leto

Look, Jared, if you’re gonna go the ‘dress like my upcoming high profile super-anti-hero-team role’ route you should go all the way. This. . . looks like a Groom’s Cake. Which is fine? But I’d personally prefer either lose the flower and icing shoes OR dress full on Joker.

Margot Robbie

Margot Robbie

And Harley is dressed AS an Oscar which is totally one of Joker’s mad cap schemes so well played.

Fantastic Four:

Jessica Alba

Jessica Alba

I can’t decide which decade she is attempting to invoke (70s? 80s? 40s?) but she looks both dated and fantastic. Which is appropriate for Sue Storm.

Kerry Washington

Kerry Washington

AMAZING. Her appearance in Rise of the Silver Surfer should not count against her (it didn’t for Chris Evans!!) and she should be on the short list for {insert your fave as yet uncast super role here}. This is like. . . STORMTROOPER CHIC and I have decided to believe she is stealth cosplaying as Finn. BOOM.

Michael B. Jordan

Michael B. Jordan

He shoulda been a contender! Look how darling he is, though. Put him in ALL the movies, Hollywood.

X-Men:

Michael Fassbender

Michael Fassbender

Smile more. Talk less.

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence

I’m the Swan Queen!

Olivia Munn

Olivia Munn

I’m just jazzed about being on the show.

Sophie Turner

Sophie Turner

God save the queen.

Naomi Watts and Liev Schrieber

Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber

Liev Schreiber is a beautiful man and his film won the big award but I would like to point out that Naomi is dressed like a galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy 2, which just started filming, would be an excellent place to introduce Captain Marvel. I’M JUST SAYING.

And the rest:

Naomi Watts

Naomi Watts

And! Just in case you forgot, Naomi has played a superhero: Jet Girl in the (AMAZING) film Tank Girl which you all should watch if you haven’t and which George Miller should remake because even though Tank Girl is perfect, imagine George Miller’s Tank Girl?!?!

Speaking of George Miller and/or Captain Marvel. . .

Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron

Charlize played a superheroine-goddess in Hancock.

Now at first I wasn’t sure about her hair here but then I realized it reminds me of Tasha Yar’s hair in Yesterday’s Enterprise and I was sold.

Also this dress is amazing. And she deserves an Oscar for Furiosa.

Slvester Stallone

Sylvester Stallone and Jennifer Flavin

I will never not think of Sly as Joseph Dredd first and foremost, sorry not sorry.
