Q&A 317: What’s your dream job, real or fictional?

In Q & A, a weekly feature of Fantastic Fangirls, we ask our staff to tackle a simple question — then open the floor to comments.

What’s your dream job, real or fictional?

Margot: I already have my dream job. I’m an interlibrary loan librarian, and it is the best job in the world.

But because I love it so much, I spend a lot of time thinking about what interlibrary loan would be like in various fictional settings. Does a librarian working for Tony Stark, Bruce Wayne, or SHIELD have access to every database ever? Does Barbara Gordon have all of JSTOR downloaded and is she responsible for many things showing up full text online?

What about at Hogwarts? Are potions professors as awful about giving citations as chemistry ones? (No, Snape, Int J Pr P I is NOT A CITATION.) You know McGonagall always gives perfect citations, but Dumbledore tends to cite things as “heard from friend.” Hermione is simultaneously the best patron ever and the worst one, because she keeps blowing out the ILL budget.

Or better yet, is interlibrary loan still a thing in Star Trek? Do Klingon librarians and Federation ones get together to agree on terms of lending? How do Klingons react if someone damages one of their books? These are important things, everyone.

Pocky: When I was little, I always wanted to be Deanna Troi. Now that I’m grown up and have become a therapist IRL…I still want to be Deanna Troi. Being able to do what I already do while also living on a starship and seeing to the emotional needs of people from dozens of different worlds and cultures would just be awesome.

Sam: When I was in junior high, a NASA astronaut (I don’t remember which one) came to our school and talked about space shuttles and moon landings and science… I imagine. The only thing I really remember is that he told us that NASA planned to have a manned mission to Mars by 2019, the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. Obviously a lot has changed in the last 25 years, as we keep cutting NASA funding and we entered a period where security is more important than exploration. But I think some of that is changing, with the pictures of Pluto and the excitement over Curiosity and stuff. Anyway, long story short (too late), I saw The Martian this weekend, and if I could have any job it would be Commander of the first manned mission to Mars, just like the awesome Commander Lewis (though her mission is the third, but WHATEVER; I guess third is fine… she *is* the first woman). I suppose I could have said Starfleet Captain, but there’s something about Mars that seems… I dunno. Slightly more real, even if it’s still very fictional.
