Skipping to Conclusions: Avengers Age of Ultron

In geekdom, we see a lot of teasers. Sometimes it’s just an image or the name of a creator, other times it’s a trailer or a simple tag line. Whatever it is, it’s meant to get a reaction from you and start a discussion. Inspired by the anticipation and buzz caused by these teasers, we at Fantastic Fangirls present Skipping to Conclusions in which we speculate about the comics, movies, TV shows, or whatever we’re excited about but hasn’t come out yet.

The trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron has dropped, one week early and six months before the theatrical release (May 1, 2015), let’s get analyzing!

First of all, I will join in the collective AAAAAAHHHHHH!!! It is a very well put together trailer that introduces the super creepy (but oddly sexy? Just me? Okay.) new villain, Ultron, juxtaposed with glimpses of our heroes in various stages of pain. Set to Pinocchio’s “I Got No Strings”…

I have a lot of robot feels, okay?

I have a lot of robot feels, okay?

Okay, now for some serious skipping:

Hulk

Bruce Banner is having a bad day. There are indications of flashbacks/mental attacks all over this trailer but Bruce looks the most distressed…

Hulkbuster

And this is Hulkbuster armor….

Romance?

And this could be Natasha talking him down? I’ve also seen speculation that this is evidence of a romance but I don’t see it. I’m not opposed and I don’t think it would come completely out of left field, but I’m not getting “omigosh they got together in between the movies” from this screengab.

So maybe Hulk gets to destroy New York again. (Poor New York, why does anyone in the Marvel Universe live there?) At the least, he is emotionally compromised. Which is maybe the theme of the whole thing given:

Tony

“It’s the end, the end of the path I started us on,” says Tony, in that super egotistical version of taking responsibility he has. Never change, Tony.

And then the response (in the trailer) is Natasha’s pragmatic “Nothing lasts forever.” echoing back to “Regimes fall every day, I tend not to weep over that.” Never change, Natasha!

Actually Ultron’s voiceover taunts that they “want to protect the world but don’t want it to change” for example —

Steve

More evidence of the flashback attack. Possible evidence of Peggy’s bit part.

— so that’s also a theme! Now, confession:

Wanda

Wanda

Twins

I AM NOT PREPARED. Wanda is so important to me and I am so scared to watch her cinematic debut. Excited! But scared.

Anyway, she spends most of her time in this teaser looking angry and possibly unhinged. Which…this might be an unpopular opinion but I love it. I love sweet Wanda, too, and I hope she is both, because BOTH is a big part of why Wanda is so important to me!

Ballet

Also so important to me: BLACK WIDOW’S BALLET BACKSTORY. THERE ARE BALLERINAS IN THIS TRAILER. RED ALERT!

There is the scary possibility that giving us Natasha backstory in Avengers 2 is an excuse not to give her a solo movie. But it could also set up that story. For now I will just bask in the ballerinas.

Final thoughts:

Clint

Clint dresses so dark in these films. Why so serious?

Who?

Who are you?

Thor

Let me hug you!

Ultron

My body is ready. (Anybody else now imagining The Blacklist as an AU where Ultron gets a body and is using Lizzie to infiltrate humanity? Just me again? Okay.)
