Ready-to-Wear Superhero at GeekGirlCon

by Anika

I am very excited to announce that I will be presenting a Ready-to-Wear Superhero Fashion Show and panel discussion at GeekGirlCon 2013 this upcoming October. Ready-to-Wear is not cosplay, we don’t recreate the costumes, but instead use regular clothing to create heroine inspired outfits. There are tumblrs dedicated to dressing in the style of almost every fandom you can imagine — and not just for conventions! I try to do it every day.

A Ready-to-Wear fashion show is something I have wanted to put together for years. GeekGirlCon has given me a venue, now I just need some volunteers. There are three ways you may participate:

(1) Runway Show: model your own Ready-to-Wear Geek look at the GeekGirlCon Fashion Show!

The show will take place at GeekGirlCon in Seattle, WA (October 19-20, 2013; day and time TBA). You do not have to have any modeling or cosplay experience. You do not have to look “like a model” or like the character you wish to RTW; cross-play, racebent, and genderbent looks are all encouraged! I want to present a diverse panel of fans and fandoms.

Runway panelists must be attending GeekGirlCon in order to participate. They will be wearing their own clothes. The outfits must follow any rules of the con/city and they will be approved by the RTW committee prior to the show (so we may present a diverse and cohesive show). We are also more than happy to help put together the looks! After the runway presentation we will be having a discussion of the looks and how they were created; panelists must be willing to participate in this Q&A.

If you are interested in being a runway panelist please email the following information to anika@fantasticfangirls.org.

Name:
Email:
Age: (required for legal purposes)
Do you have any experience as a model or a panelist at any venue?
Do you cosplay?
Do you practice ready-to-wear superhero/stealth cosplay/disneyboud?
What character(s) are you interested in presenting as part of the runway show?

Note: In order for models to be listed in the program I need to send names to the con by August 15 so please contact me as soon as possible.

(2) Lookbook: model your own Ready-to-Wear Geek look in print!

If you can’t get to Seattle for the convention or you are not comfortable walking in a runway show, please consider being a part of the lookbook! I will be collecting images now through September and present the book as part of the panel. After the convention the lookbook will be available online. As with the runway panelists, you do not need to have any experience or look any certain way to participate; again we want as diverse a group as possible. We want everybody!

Lookbook models will be wearing their own clothes. Professional photography is not required (if you need help with photography, let us know). All photographs will be approved by the Ready-to-Wear committee prior to inclusion in the lookbook. Models may submit as many looks as they like but not all may be accepted or published. We are more than happy to help put together looks and photo sessions!

If you are interested in being a lookbook model please email the following information to anika@fantasticfangirls.org.

(3) Sponsor: support the Ready-to-Wear Superhero Initiative!

I am seeking: photographers, graphic designers, print companies, fashion consultants, bargain shoppers, people who run geek-fashion tumblrs, polyvore addicts, film makers, committee members, speech writers, cheerleaders, cat herders, jewelry makers, volunteers. If you want to support this project write me and tell me how! And of course I hope to see everyone at GeekGirlCon in October!
