Fantastic Fangirls Book Club #2: Ghost in the Shell

First, a big thank-you to everyone who participated in out first book club discussion, on Strangers in Paradise. I personally appreciated hearing the diversity of views and opinions on the book!

For our second book club we’ve selected another critically acclaimed and highly regarded classic which many people have not read: Masamune Shirow’s Ghost in the Shell.

Specifically, we’ll be reading and discussing Ghost in the Shell, vol. 1. The story follows Major Motoko Kusanagi as she hunts down a criminal known as The Puppeteer. Set in a future wherein humans and technology have merged, Ghost in the Shell addresses what it means to be human, and what it means to be a member of a society.

We’ll begin our discussion of Ghost in the Shell on June 7th, 2010. Get your copy, read up, and get ready to join the conversation in June!

The book is available for purchase at a number of online retailers. It is also available at many public libraries. Be advised, there are at least two different versions of volume one, one censored from the original Japanese. We at Fantastic Fangirls are very likely going to be reviewing the censored version, as it’s easier to find and cheaper, but we welcome discussion of either edition.
